Cedric Road Extension
On Cedric Road, we were commissioned to deliver a bespoke structural glass extension that would elevate the spatial experience of an existing residence. Challenging in both geometry and execution, this project demonstrates how precision-engineered glazing can harmonise contemporary design with structural performance – creating an elegant extension that feels light, open and seamlessly connected.
Design Brief
The client sought a glazed extension that would amplify natural light, visually expand interior space and blur boundaries between inside and out. With a raked glass profile at the heart of the design, the extension demanded meticulous planning and specialist expertise to execute structural support while retaining a refined, minimal aesthetic.
ASG’s remit extended beyond standard glazing supply: we were tasked with delivering a structurally sound yet visually unobtrusive solution that reinforces the architectural intent of openness and clarity.
Glazing Solution: Raked Structural Glass
At the core of this project is the raked structural glass extension – a solution that leverages advanced glass engineering to achieve expressive geometry without compromising performance.
- Structural Glass Boss System: Utilised to create a seamless glass structure with minimal visible framing, the system supports glazing loads while maintaining uninterrupted sightlines.
- Raked Geometry: The inclined glass planes required tailored engineering to ensure stability under dead and live loads, integrating bespoke silicon joints and support interfaces.
This bespoke structural glass assembly not only achieves the architect’s desire for transparency and light but also performs reliably under structural demands.
Technical Expertise & Installation Challenges
One of the defining features of this project was the need to install large, raked glass panels in a constrained urban setting. To safely and precisely position each element:
- Spider Crane Deployment: A compact spider crane was employed to lift and manoeuvre glass units into place. This specialised equipment provided the reach and agility necessary for accurate installation, particularly given limited site access and the sensitive nature of the glass geometry.
- Glass Support Interface: Custom glass finds were engineered to act as discrete support points – elegantly resolving structural connection without visual clutter, and ensuring loads were correctly transferred to the primary structure.
ASG’s experienced site team coordinated closely with the structural engineer and contractor to programme the installation, minimising risk and maximising precision.
Seamless Internal Connection
To knit the new extension into the existing home, the design incorporated Origin Soho internal doors from the Soho collection. These doors play a pivotal role in both circulation and aesthetic continuity.
The Soho series is distinguished by its steel-look aluminium profiles and slim sightlines, blending industrial character with architectural refinement. The internal doors at Cedric Road are tailored to the project’s language of light and connection, offering:
- Slim sightlines and generous glazing to maintain transparency between spaces.
- Bespoke configuration to suit the bespoke extension geometry and flow.
- Elegant hardware and finish options, creating a cohesive experience from the original building to the new extension.
These doors not only maintain visual continuity but also provide functional internal division without interrupting daylight or spatial fluidity.
Outcome: Light, Flow & Architectural Clarity
The completed extension at Cedric Road stands as a testament to what can be achieved when highly engineered glazing systems are paired with thoughtful design intent.
